It’s a fantastic base builder and survival sim, but what makes The Alters truly brilliant is how these systems are underlined with vulnerable, emotional moments – like holes being punctured in your space suit. The game’s biggest reveal, however, is that of the wealthy VIPs masquerading as Squid Game guards. Previously seen only briefly in season 1, the VIPs’ increased involvement in the games makes them a prominent part of season 3. The run up to the largely heartbreaking, yet expected finale while tightly written, feels chaotic given the multiple parallel storylines.
There are no skills to unlock or upgrades to earn in Rematch. The better one wins, and the other one goes back into matchmaking with a chip on their shoulder. This is old-school game design; you’re not playing to get stuff that makes you better. Featuring fast-paced gun assembly mechanics and intense combat, Gun X is a VR shooter that offers varying levels of FPS for added excitement. The game was developed and is designed to be a virtual reality experience, with its unique features including hand-held weapons, immersive PvP, and zombie survival modes.
You and your player two will play as either Mio or Zoe (two aspiring authors who specialize in sci-fi and fantasy, respectively). Outlaws’ combat serves up some solid cover-based shooting with authentic sounds and punchy smoke-and-spark effects with each blaster bolt impact, but precious little in the way of new ideas – it’s less Bad Batch and more basic bitch. There’s always the challenge of knowing when to detonate them to take out the most enemies, but that’s the same thing we’ve been doing for decades, so while it’s effective, it doesn’t make Outlaws’ combat stand out. Yakuza 0 has an amazing story, but is also filled with charming and silly side-quests that keep you smiling in between heavy story reveals. The beat ’em up gameplay is also uber satisfying as you hit combos and plummet enemies into the dirt. However, the big standout here is that the Director’s Cut offers new cut scenes and English voice-overs.
But in this context, these simplistic encounters are just what’s needed. They’re slightly unpredictable hazards that make the landscape feel more dangerous than it would have been without them, without being so challenging or complex to deal with I have to stop everything and pretend I’m playing a shooter for a couple of minutes. Jan just isn’t that kind of guy, and this isn’t that kind of game. However, making copies of yourself isn’t as simple as pressing ‘go’ and watching a machine whirl to life.
Our Impressions After Two Hours Of Gameplay
11 Bit Studios always finds the humanity in the brutal fight for survival, and the studio’s newest game is no different. The Alters is a sci-fi base building sim set on a distant planet where you need to create alternate versions of yourself to survive. On the surface, it may seem like a retelling of a classic sci-fi cloning story, but in reality, this copy couldn’t be more different. The premiere returns us to the arena’s bloodied corridor immediately after the previous season’s shootout between the rebelling players, led by battered survivor Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae), and the pink jumpsuited guards.
That certainly doesn’t mean 2024 was a worse year for gaming – far from it. But one thing that is apparent is that they were spaced out, unlike last year when the hits just seemed to keep on coming. In 2024, IGN didn’t give out a single 9 or 10 between the end of June and beginning of September, which helps explain why it felt a bit barren for games on the whole. Nevertheless, the year began with a literal deluge of great games before the noticeable summer pause.
