Astro once again controls really well in this game although our adorable robot friend doesn’t have as deep a move set as a certain plumber does. Astro can jump, punch enemies, and perform a spin attack but that’s about it for the main move set. That was never a problem though as the game is constantly introducing new things for you to use to show off that controller and it feels really good all the way through.
The question is should you play it and the answer is a resounding yes if you’ve ever found yourself nostalgic for PlayStation as a brand or if you enjoy 3D platformers. I mentioned this already in my Astro’s Playroom preview, but it really can’t be overstated how innovative the DualSense PS5 Controller is and just how effective Astro’s Playroom is at showing it off. From the opening moments when it teaches you about the adaptive triggers and haptic feedback it never stops impressing all the way until the very end. Once you finish all the levels at least once you’ll unlock a series of “speed run” levels that are variants off of the game’s main levels.
Some of the ‘boss’ characters, including a dinosaur-like character, may be scary for younger children. Head up to where the checkpoint is, and on the raised platform behind the pink plant is a small outcropping. Stand here and look out to space, and the special bot will appear. Even though Astro’s Playroom is relatively simple, it kept me entertained for about five hours with its array of challenges and entertaining Easter eggs. During live draw hk through the guts of the PS5, you run across all sorts of PlayStation references and memorabilia. From seeing bot versions of iconic characters (like Kratos and Solid Snake) to gathering old peripherals and consoles, the journey is full of “I recognize that!
While it was originally just a tech demo for the DualSense, it offers a colorful and expertly crafted platforming game to tie in all of that controller’s features. The levels are packed to the brim with PlayStation Easter eggs and references; bots dressed up as iconic PlayStation characters in iconic scenery. There’s the red-tattooed Kratos bot with a smaller Atreus bot in a boat in the Cooling Springs beach area.

Astro’s Playroom also includes collectibles that represent the history of PlayStation, spanning from the PS1 era to the PS5 era. These collectibles add an extra layer of depth and nostalgia to the game. The game itself effectively utilizes the DualSense controller’s features, resulting in an engaging and innovative gaming experience. Although the game is relatively short, it packs a lot of fun and demonstrates the potential of the PS5 and DualSense in this new generation of gaming.

There are areas where Astro must ascend while in a miniature rocket, and players must exert more effort pressing the adaptive triggers. Also at the second Checkpoint, head left along the cliff to find a Bot kneeling in front of a lad with a staff. The Bot with the staff is the Maiden in Black, a demon who uses souls collected by the player character to help them level up in the Nexus.
Team Asobi was formally spun-off into an independent studio within Sony’s PlayStation Studios in June 2021. A full-length sequel, Astro Bot, was announced on May 30, 2024, and was released for the PlayStation 5 on September 6, 2024. Finally, as much as I adore Astro’s cute nature and attention to detail with its celebration of PlayStation nostalgia, I would have loved a more considered narrative on top of all that. There was once a time when pack-in bundled games were regarded as the very best games available for that new console. You bought a Super Nintendo to play Super Mario World because it came in the box.
If you’re new to platformers, or video games in general, you may find yourself rushing in and dying quickly for seemingly no reason. If this happens a lot to you, try stepping back and observing the obstacles ahead. Study the movement of platforms, observe what enemies are up ahead, and plan your approach accordingly. As you get better at playing games, you’ll get better at being able to make things up as you go. There are a few things that elevate Astro from being just another fun-but-forgettable platformer. I still remember the first time I played Super Mario 64, and how amazed I was that pushing the analog stick slightly would make Mario walk, while a stronger push would make him run.
Each bot’s design is inspired by iconic games from the PlayStation series. Network Speed Run is a mini-route, resembling one of the time-constrained levels in the game. You can repeat each route multiple times if you want to improve your result. The first starfish is under the pier immediately to the right of when the player first lands in the water from the slide.
You can also visit the GPU Jungle, which, as the name implies, is more of a jungle ruin to play around in, and the SSD Speedway with its neon sci-fi backdrop. Astro’s Playroom is a free platforming game, included as a pack-in with the PS5. It’s inspired by the characters and concepts first introduced in The Playroom and The Playroom VR, which culminated in the full-blown Astro Bot Rescue Mission for PlayStation VR. The game serves as a showcase for the DualSense controller’s features and functionality. We awarded the game a 9/10 in our Astro’s Playroom PS5 review, describing it as a “love letter to PlayStation”.

This is an unmistakable reference to Final Fantasy VII for the PS1, released in 1997 by Square Enix. In particular, the use of the Buster Sword under a spotlight makes this is a reference to the game’s title screen. One family , “the Labo level is great for little ones to get the hang of mastering 3D movement. There are no enemies or places to fall but still some things to interact with and so platforming too”.
